Is the use of text messaging in court infringing on our rights? I don’t think at all. Most people never really consider that their text messages can be used against them but in today’s court it has played a part in putting people away. Two men were convicted of armed robbery with the help of archived text messages. The Prosecutors had to subpoena Skytel for the information so it was legally obtained. The text messages that were obtained revealed plans of the heist, how they were going to escape, clothes, and much more. Text messaging has been also used in other cases. For example, an alleged cocaine dealer in the Washington, D.C., area had his SMS text messages used against him, as did a wire fraud defendant last year. They also popped up in the Kobe Bryant sex case and the trial involving the attempted murder of rapper 50 Cent.
