The answer to this question seems to be common sense. It has always been thought that shutting off the computer will charge it faster than charging while on. Christopher Null, the author of the article I read, set out to find out if a laptop charging system really has anything to do with whether it's running or not? He talked to computer vendors to find out what they had to say about this. Dell, Apple and HP stated that laptops charge faster when off. Sony stated that it depends but that it should charge faster when off. Gateway stated that it does not matter if the laptop is on or off. Christopher then put the laptops to the test himself. Toshiba and Dell laptop took twice as long to charge when on then when off. The results for the Apple MacBook Air were very interesting. It took 50% more time to charge while off then when on. Christopher talked to Apple and they had no response for this matter. He found out that Sony's response to the question was the correct one. How fast the laptop charges has to do with the design of its circuitry. The laptops A/C adaptor is what matters. Laptops with tiny A/C adaptors will take longer to charge than those with bigger A/C adaptors. By design, most laptops will charge faster when off.
