How to Identify Bad CIOs in Their Natural Habitat

http://www.cio.com/article/186800

I wanted to get this last post in toward the closing of this blog to bring more "value" to this little article I am posting. I think it has a lot of value for those working in the real world. Pretty much the article tells you the common traits and characteristics of bad or deceptive CIOs. For each suggestion of advice mentioned in the article there is a real-life account of CIOs that have followed each of these trends. Most importantly, it tells you what to avoid doing when you become a CIO yourself.

Here's to the closing of the MIS Spring 2008 Blog.

Electric Bike

With gas prices at about four dollars per gallon, it is no surprise that people are looking for new means of transportation. The E+ electric bike is a good way to beat the soaring gas prices. This two-wheeler can achieve speeds of up to thirty miles per hour without the need for you to pedal. The bike can carry you twenty miles without any extra work on your part on a single charge. If you do decide to do a little work, you’ll get around forty miles out of it. This bike would be ideal for someone who is traveling relatively short distances on a daily basis. If you live out in the country, you probably wouldn’t want to ride all the way to work every day, but this bike would be perfect for a college student who lives near campus.

Motorized Pool Lounge Chair

Growing up in Palm Springs, I have been through my share of pool accessories but this new Motorized Pool Lounge Chair takes the cake. When I am lounging in my pool it is extremely important that I stay in the middle of the pool. I get extremely annoyed when I float to one end of the pool and I can’t get back to the middle without getting wet or using a ton of energy by pushing off the side. The Motorized Pool Lounge Chair is equipped with two quiet electric motors that drive two propellers hidden below the surface, dual joystick steering, cushioned backrest and armrests with a built-in drink holder, and it Inflates quickly and easily with included electric pump.

The WB returning for online videos

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2288799,00.asp

In an effort to attract younger viewers, Warner Bros. is relaunching The WB. But, this time it will be an online video effort rather than broadcast television. The website feature some of the WB's original programs like the show "Friends". The website is intended to target 16-34 year olds. I think this is a good move by Warner Bros. because online video programming is becoming much more popular. As internet speeds get faster, people can stream much larger video files which ultimately means higher video quality. I think that video quality is always going to be a battle for online video programmers, but it recent years it has definately gotten better.

Robot Soldier

“Israel's newest soldier can see at night, never nods off on sentry duty and can carry 660 pounds without complaining”. It is vehicle invented by the Israeli military that is essentially a robotic soldier, among the first in the world to be operational. The robot does not require anybody to be onboard. The Robot vehicle is operated from a command center that would be a lot further away from where the action is taking place. The vehicle has cameras, night-vision, sensors, and armory. “It can replace human soldiers in dangerous roles, cutting casualty rate”.

Cancerous Cell Phones??

I have heard about this on the news a couple times and seen it in the newspaper. A neurosurgeon is telling us about how cell phones cause cancer. He is claiming that more people will die from cancer caused from cell phones than smoking or asbestos. The only problem is that his claims come on tests of older studies. Other studies claim that there is no harm caused by cell phones. Unfortunately, only time will tell, and it might be too late by then.

HD T.V.

I find it pretty sad that a lot of people think that just because you buy an HD T.V. means that every channel is going to be high definition. My mom’s friend just purchased four flat screens for her bar and was surprised to find out that all of the channels weren’t coming in at HD. What my mom’s friend and a lot of people don’t realize is that you need to purchase the HD channels separately from the T.V. There are only a few HD channels that come with the T.V. Even if you do decide to buy the HD network it doesn’t guaranty that the channel you want will be HD. There are a lot more standard def channels than there are HDTV channels. In other words, not everything that every HDTV owner wants to watch has made the transition to HD.

robotic hands

Apparently this woman Yoky Matsuoka is a 100% genius when it comes to robots. She has developed a robotic hand that can intercept messages from the brain to the muscles and mimic the actions. It sounds like the applications could be extremely helpful with stroke patients as well as paralysis victims. Read the full article and watch the robotic hand in action from the link below!

An Expensive Hobby

Model airplanes I always thought were boring and lame, until i saw one that was 10 feet wide and 65 pounds. Thats a big model plane. It actually is a 1:5 scale model of an A-10 Warthog that easily pushes 200 mph. The price for one of these?? Try $12,000. I can get a brand new Kia for that much...

Happy Birthday Hubble!!

It has been eighteen years since NASA sent the Hubble Telescope on it's voyage into space. They have just released some breathtaking photos to commemorate the occasion. Its incredible to see just how big the universe is, especially when the images are so clear.

Crash avoidance technologies: Benefit or distraction?
Advances in car safety features, such as electronic stability control (ESC) have been proven to save lives and will be standard on all vehicles by the 2012 model year. Now a host a new safety features are making their way to the market place. Will these technologies be as widespread as ESC and become significant life saving features or will they become a distraction to drivers? A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) takes a look at five new features and crash data from 2002-2006 to see how they can help prevent crashes.

Two features, forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, are the most promising of these new technologies at helping to avoid crashes. Forward-collision warning helps to prevent front impacts by alerting drivers of the potential hazard with alarms, flashing lights, and/or on some vehicles, automatically applying the brakes.

There are more than two million front crashes—that’s 40 percent of the total number of crashes in a given year. If some of these crashes and the over 7,000 deaths that occurred from them could be prevented, then the potential benefit from this safety feature could significantly reduce injuries, related medical costs, emergency services, and repair bills. However, the IIHS warns that if drivers rely too much on technology to help them out or decide not to heed the warnings, then the benefit wouldn’t be as great.

Lane-departure warning alerts drivers, using a vibrating steering wheel, audible tone, or visual notice if they are moving out of their lane when a turn signal isn’t activated. In the period reviewed, there were almost 500,000 crashes per year and over 10,000 deaths from these accidents. A 2004 report from IIHS shows that textured pavement, known as rumble strips, have reduced head-on crashes and side swipes by 25 to 30 percent. If lane departure warning works just as well, the IIHS points out that feature could potentially eliminate more than 100,000 accidents and 2,500 deaths.

Three other safety features—blind-spot detection, adaptive headlights, and emergency brake assistance were also evaluated. Blind-spot detection helps keep track of vehicles in a blind spot by alerting drivers through a light by the side mirror or in some models, a beep. As my colleague Jim Travers notes in his recent blog, this warning can be distracting to drivers and can be turned off. There are 450,000 blind-spot-related crashes per year, but only a small number involve fatalities, limiting the benefit.

Adaptive headlights help drivers see better in nighttime driving by moving in the direction of the steering, but according to the IIHS, several studies show that drivers speed up when there are reflector posts or markers that indicate curves in the road. If this is the case, then drivers may also speed up if they have adaptive headlights.

Finally, emergency brake assist senses panic braking and prepares the brakes for extra pressure. This feature overlaps with the forward-collision warning and both systems are intended to prevent frontal crashes, so many of the crashes could be avoided by just the forward-collision warning, says the IIHS report.

Most of these technologies are relatively new and not available from all manufacturers. Volvo is the only manufacturer with all five technologies on some of its models, but other upscale brands such as BMW, Cadillac, and Mercedes-Benz are testing out some of these features. A recent Harris poll reveals that consumers showed an interest in purchasing blind-spot detection and lane-departure warning features, but the study also found that drivers still want control of their vehicles. Other studies show that automatic features tend to be the most effective as we have seen with existing features such as ESC and antilock brakes.

Only time will tell if these new safety features will reduce crashes and save lives, or if they may rely too much on driver response and become more of a distraction than a safety tool. Consumers shopping for a new vehicle should become familiar with the latest safety systems and seek models equipped with proven features, such as antilock brakes, side- and curtain air bags, and stability control. This latest report suggests that forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning systems are worth considering, as well.

So this is the article, i thought it was interesting. I the world progessrtessing to fast for us. I think so. people depend on technology to much to do simple things. How hard is it to look behind you to back up. Do you really need a beep to tell you somthing is there. Whynot just be aware and know, hey there is a curb, I should not drive over it. it is not difficult. i am asian, I have an excuse for driving badly, however I do not need it. I do not need fancy equipment to tell me I will run over a curb. i use my eyes.

Projection of Technology failures in 2008

At newscientist.com, writers have made a ballsy move and are aiming at projecting the top five technology failures of 2008. We are in a volatile place technologically where things are constantly changing so it's interesting to see what new scientists projections are.

1. Facebooks problem lies in its loss of private user information through a ad system it uses called beacon. This may have damaged themselves by seemingly valuing the ad company over users.

2. Wkipedia is being challenged by a similar open-sourec search engine called google knol. Here academics are allowed to contribute making information more transparent. Google is king and it is looking like google will take down wikipedia in the open-sorce search engine world.

3. On the other hand google may suffer from stretching itself too thin in followingventures into renewable energy research.

4. Second life is sinking. Don't know what it is as no evedence is provided.

5. Lastly are all dating websites. People are tiring of online dating and eurn for personal interaction.

License Plate Recognition

Police stations across the United States are now following the UK in implementing license plate readers into their squad cars. Right now, over 400 of the 1800 US agencies have them, and more are soon to follow.

This is a great new advancement in law enforcement. It offers officers to have a much easier time identifying stolen cars, etc.

Fast cooling computer chips

(I've never considered myself a hightech person so if I mis-state anything in this article, please forgive me!) I recently read an article online discussing how the furure of computer chip technology is mainly threatened by the inability to efficiently cool computer chip. Computer geeks fear no more because Purdue university has come to the rescue. Tiny ionic wind engines increase a chips cpooloing rate from 40-50% to 250%. This leap will allow thinner and faster laptops to start coming out with this new chip cooling system in the next 3 years. Check out photos and the full article at the link below.

Food Vs Fuel

Prices have been steadily rising on the price of all foods recently and this is due to a few different factors. One of course is mother Nature which we cant do to much about but there is also a new debate rising based on bio fuel and its effect on world hunger. We cant be solely responsible for the rising prices of all the different foods out there but an upcoming problem could be the effect government subsidies have on the price of corn and everything it affects as feeder to and such. Recently corn has gone up from 6% of the total crop being used for this new fuel to about 25% now and rising. This could have a huge impact on the price of food for everyone but of course america wont go hungry, just the other 3rd world countries that already have a shortage and will now have even less.

Virgin Airlines Uses IT to Boost VIP Customer Satisfaction

Virgin Atlantic Airlines has recently acquired new information technology used to enhance their very important customers' overall experience. For example, Virgin employees now have access to customer information, flight data, and other details such as limo service. According to Virgin's IT Director Mike Cope, the system has greatly enhanced customer service in the areas it has been implemented in.

This whole information gathering revolution that's occurring in the marketplace today is a catch-22 in my opinion. On one hand, it increases the level of customer service, but on the other hand, the employees of the companies that you deal with on an everyday basis now have access to your personal information. Scary thought...

Social networking risks

In this day and age information is everywhere on the net about everyone and anyone. Some people like the one in this article try to avoid myspace all together but use facebook or something similar with private settings thinking that means its all good. Well its not and using any of these sites and accidentally clicking one link or another could result in you uploading personal information to whoever may be looking for it. Just using the private settings are not going to stop anyone who wants to know about you so dont think your safe because you clicked a whole one box saying i dont want my information to be public.

Surfing Company Goes Hi-Tech

Surf clothing and accessory manufacturer O'Neill recently contracted a data storage firm, Data Domain, to take over their data backup responsibilities in five locations in Europe. Data Domain has offered them a compression rate of nearly 18x, reducing the manufacturer's data from 57 terabytes to 3. I have been surfing for a little while and work at a surf shop, and I can say that this is an unusual transition into new technology. For some reason or another, it seems as if companies in the surfing industry have been reluctant or slow to adopt hi-tech business strategies, so good job O'Neill!

PDAs to track Olympic VIPs in Beijing

http://www.news.com/PDAs-to-track-Olympic-VIPs-in-Beijing/2100-1041_3-6237157.html?tag=cd.top

VIPs will be handed a handheld gps device, called EventTrack, which will allow them to navigate around Beijing during the times of the Olympics. Besides being a GPS unit, VIPs will be able to use the unit to send messages for pick up and drop off locations. Because the Olympics are a world wide event, planners have said that they will be able to change the language of the device to be compatible to specific VIPs. The device will try and solve two problems Olympic planners are trying to avoid: traffic and security.

How do the planners actually decide who is considered a VIP? It seems that if you are invited to participate in the Olympics, you should be considered a VIP. Also, China should also do more than hand out gps devices to protect athletes for security purposes. There is so many more things that can and will need to be done to protect everyone on the scurity level.

Fujitsu's New Hard Drive

Japanese HDD manufacturer Fujitsu recently announced the release of a new Hard Disk Drive which offers unprecedented 256-bit AES hardware encryption. In the past, most drives have been encrypted using software, but this new chip has the encryption built right in. What does this mean? Well, Fujitsu claims that the new drive will have "more robust security and faster system performance" than its software competitors.

Unlimited Streaming Movies

Netflix expects to announce three new partnerships dealing with their new venture into set-top boxes so they can stream video right into their subscribers homes. The idea behind this is to allow their customers to rent and view any movie they want like our current on demand service from the digital cable companies. But netflix will have thousands more movies to choose from unlike the limited ammount the cable companies are currently able to show.

This will be a great advancement for netflix subscribers and people who pay for on demand since they will only have to pay a monthly fee and not per movie. Existing netflix users will enjoy the benfit of not needing to wait on the movie to be mailed out like before with their system of mailing each new movie when the other is returned to them.

Now there is a way to hid IM chats

Take a look at this ad on for AIM, it gives uses the ability to errase all records of an IM conservation. I really like the that it prevents copying and print screen of the text box.

Now if only they had this for text messages....It would have come in handy for the mayor of Detroit.

Orthopedic Underwear with ergonomic feed-back?

oAn Industrial design student from a University in Austria, developed a concept piece of orthopedic underwear with ergonomic feed-back. What? Well, what this means is, the student developed a shirt with tiny receptors woven into the material. These sensors can detect long periods of bad posture and send tiny electrical impulse to make the person correct their posture. The idea sounds a little cheesy at first but the shirt has potential helpful applications in rehabilitation centers. The product was developed a year ago but still remains only a concept. Checkout a picture at the link below, and find access to ways to improve your posture!

Light Sabers!!!!

Well, not quite. But this flashlight get's pretty hot... Too hot for it's own good, actually. Most commercial flashlights produce under 100 lumens, while the "Torch" produces 4100. The result is blinding light that can burn paper and even scramble eggs. It's not too safe, however, as after two minutes of use, the testers could smell the metal burning and battery smoking.

Maybe they need to put this through a little more R&D...

Zap to do three-wheeled car in 2009

http://www.news.com/Zap-to-do-three-wheeled-car-in-2009/2100-13833_3-6228614.html?tag=cd.top

Zap, an electric car based company in Santa Rosa, California is planning on introducing a three wheeled car called the Alias in 2009. The car is said to be able to top speeds of 100 mpg and will be able to go upto 150 miles on a single charge. The price tag for the car is said to be $30,000. A benefit of the the car being three wheeled instead of four wheeled, it will be able to go farther than its four wheeled counter part since it is lighter in weight. For the Alias, Zap is currently working with China's Youngman Automotive Group to produce this car. Another advantage it has is that it can get to the market faster because it will be classified as a motorcycle and will have less regulations to get through. Besides the Alias, Zap also has other projects in the works to hopefully help the country go greener.

This is just another company that is trying get in the "Go Green" trend. Not till the cars are out can we tell if the company is a success or not. Of course there will be those individuals who will buy these vehicles just to be the first on the block to have the newest toy.

Wiiiiiiiiiiii

Nintendo released their newer version of Mario kart recently and it has been a big hit for them. The company came out with a steering wheel that comes with the game which makes it interaction fun, just like the wi gaming system was set up to be. This game has been around just about as long as the originals like duck hunt and excitebike, the games we all remember from the first nintendo console. The downside, you gotta buy another steering wheel cuz who likes to play with themselves??? Either way it looks like a fun game.

Built-In Accident Recorder

Been in a car accident lately? Whose fault is it? And now the most important question; how can you prove it? Usually after a fender bender there is a fair amount of finger pointing, no one wants to admit it was their fault. The car Camera Recorder Pro can have the final say in a dilemma like this one. This DVR-equipped rearview reduces blind spots, but its main advantage is the DVR. If you get in an accident it records and stores the incident. Now you have video proof that can strengthen your case when you are dealing with insurance companies.

BlackBerry's quest: Fend off the iPhone

http://www.news.com/BlackBerrys-quest-Fend-off-the-iPhone/2100-1036_3-6238363.html?tag=cd.lede

Even though RIM has significant amount of the smartphone market, the introduction of the Iphone has decreased it its market share from 45 percent to 40 percent. There are many things that are planned in the future for the Iphone, but RIM is hoping to keep battling to be a top dog in the smartphone market. The increase of the popularity is shown in Fortune 500 companies. One-third of those companies has said that it is interested in giving Iphones to their employees. In June, Apple is expected to release their new 3G version of the Iphone which will again compete with the RIM phones that are released in the same time period.

It seems as if the consumers for RIM and the Iphone are from different sides. It just depends on if you need it as more of a computer type or for entertainment. The Iphone is more for entertainment, while RIM phones are more for business type people who need to check their schedules constantly.

Plastic Blood Cells?

"Red blood cells travel through the bloodstream delivering vital oxygen to body tissues and taking away unwanted carbon dioxide – and they have to squeeze through blood vessels as thin as 3 micrometres across to do it. But in some diseases, such as malaria and sickle cell disease, red blood cells lose this ability to deform.

Because of the small size of red blood cells and the demanding work they do, nobody has succeeded in making artificial versions to help people with such conditions.

Now though Joseph DeSimone, a chemical engineer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US, thinks he knows how.

He has created tiny sacks of the polymer polyethylene glycol just 8 micrometres across – in the range of human red blood cells – that are capable of deforming in a way that allows them to pass through the tiniest capillaries."

This article is very intriguing with the ability to replicate human cells in an artifical form that will help patients with certain diseases.

Glass chip spins silk just like a spider

This article talks about a breakthrough that scientists have been trying to master for years. Spider silk, for it's size, multiple times stronger and lighter, yet much more pliable than our strongest metals today, so scientists have been trying to find ways to create similar fibers to use everywhere from optical cables to bulletproof vests. The chip uses a complex chemical process to create the the strands using fibers and proteins that spiders actually use. More info can be found at this link:

Beermenus.com, where have you been all my life?

http://www.news.com/8301-13577_3-9927958-36.html?tag=cd.blog

Beermenus.com is a terrific website that shows the type of beer's that a particular place carries. Along with the beer menu's, this website also lists special events that are upcoming at particular places. Currently, the website only serves those in the New York area. However, the site plans to expand as soon as it can. There are other websites that are similar to it, but this website lists both the beer menu's, as well as the events going on.

At the moment this is a great website for those in the New York area, but when this website does expand to more cities, it could have the possibility of becoming a MySpace type website. The website seems to be a very helpful in deciding which place to go to on a Friday or Saturday night instead of driving around from place to place.

Mail That Never Gets Lost

Who is tired of relatives claiming they have sent birthday cards via mail but never get them? I know I am. TrackingTheWorld, a GPS developer, has found the solution to this problem. They have introduced an envelope that has a light GPS tracker. It is durable enough to shoot through sorting machines without crushing the circuits. This technology lets users track a letters every move. They are still evaluating trials on the product and are not sure when it will be ready for production. When released it will surely help the postal service put an end to mail delays.

AT&T: Internet to hit full capacity by 2010

http://www.news.com/ATT-Internet-to-hit-full-capacity-by-2010/2100-1034_3-6237715.html?tag=cd.top

The vice president of legislative affairs for AT&T, Jim Cicconi, has said that the internet will pushing close to the full capacity of the internet by 2010. He was saying that by 2010, 20 households will be producing more amount of internet traffic than the entire internet today. When videos begin to be uploaded or downloaded in HD is when we will begin to see more of an increase in the amount of traffic that is being used. HD video's are will use a significantely more amount of bandwith then the current videos that are being used today.

It is amazing to see that we are actually pushing the limits of the internet. I'm sure that before, the internet was seen as something that had no limitations, but of course we have gotten a little greedy and push the internet to it limits. Hopefully, something can be down were the internet is imporved without putting more costs than necessary to the consumers.

Coming soon: Movies on flash memory cards

http://www.news.com/Coming-soon-Movies-on-flash-memory-cards/2100-11398_3-6232651.html?tag=cd.top

Move over blockbuster, netflix, and any other movie renters. There is a possible new way of renting movies coming to a kiosk near you. Company founder of Portomedia, Chris Armstrong, is planning introduce a new way to buy or rent videos in a faster and more efficient way. Consumers will able to buy or rent a movie by downloading it to a flash drive or memory card. A kiosk will have hard drives that will be able to hold anywhere from 350 to 5,000 movies. A customer will just plug in there flash drive or memory card, enter there pin code, and choose which movie they want to download. Copyright licenses will be no problem since Armstrong has gotten the okay from major studios to build the library for his business.

This seems like a great idea because if you have been to a Hollywood Video or Blockbuster on a Friday or Saturday night, it seems like it takes forever to get in line and pay for your rentals. Downloading the movies to a memory card will take somewhere around 60 seconds, which is significantly less time. This is a great idea and should be coming to the United States soon.

The battery is called the Hymotion 5 and it is built to be put in the location of where the spare tire would normally be. This battery would increase the miles per gallon from about 40 to about 100. The price tag on this battery is pretty steap to at $9,995, plus $400 for shipping charges.

With gas prices probably reaching $4 a gallon here in San Diego, Prius owners have another alternative of increasing there already great mpg. This could also get more prospective car buyers to lean towards the Toyota Prius to get more bang for their buck. Even though the price for the battery seems pretty steap, it looks like a good idea right now because there is no telling when the price of gas is going to be going down. As of right now, it does not look like it is going to be happening anytime soon.

iPhone a flop in Europe, but why?

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/90286/iphone-a-flop-in-europe-but-why/

The iPhone has been a huge success here in the U.S. but its not the case in Europe. Actual sales have been much less than projected there. Reasons why include cost of the iPhone, cost of service, competition from Nokia and performance. The iPhone in France costs 749 euros ($1,200) and service runs up to 119 euros ($189) a month. The cost of purchasing an iPhone exceeds the cost of purchasing most laptops! Another issue is competition from Nokia. Nokia has not been a major competitor in the U.S. but it has taken a big part in the European market. The iPhone in Europe has created terrible word of mouth due to its performance. The iPhone is very slow and Europeans are used to their 3G phones that have been there for years.

Free battery for electric cars

If this is the new way to get people to buy electric cars I think it might work. I think they're should be tax breaks/rebates for all that are helping to conserve. This is pretty cool to find out about.

Soybeans???? Really, lets use the sun if they're just gonna raise the price for soybeans

Soybean prices are rising and it's easy to see why. If we just change what it is that we are desperate for then what is the point of changing at all. I believe solar power is the best way to go and hope that it takes over instead of corn, soybeans or whatever else it is that they are coming up with these days.

Another new release from Microsoft

Microsoft is to release an add-on to their office software that will actually let you just search what it is you are trying to do with the software they recently released. So many have had problems with the new office components so they are responding by this new add-on that allows you to type in the command and link it from the older versions to help with the general understanding of the new technology.

Can an acquisition actually create diversification?

Since Microsoft announced they are taking over Yahoo there have been several skeptics. Now there is becoming a serious problem since the employees from Yahoo are speaking out about not wanting to work for the computer giant and the employees of Microsoft are becoming upset that their company is spending all this money on technology and people that is not them, showing lack of faith.

New robot to sniff out landmines

http://technology.newscientist.com/channel/tech/mg19826535.900-mongooserobot-duo-sniffs-out-landmines.html

From someone who visits Africa often, believe me when I say landmines are a problem. Now, instead of a metal detector, which can get you killed. They are tethering mongooses to a robot to lead the animal into a minefield so it can sniff out the metal. haha. So, for all you animal lovers out there, sorry... its Africa.

Urban miners look for precious metals in cell phones

Thinking of throwing out your old cell phone? Think again. Maybe you should mine it first for gold, silver, copper and a host of other metals embedded in the electronics -- many of which are enjoying near-record prices.
It's called "urban mining," scavenging through the scrap metal in old electronic products in search of such gems as iridium and gold, and it is a growth industry around the world as metal prices skyrocket.
The materials recovered are reused in new electronics parts and the gold and other precious metals are melted down and sold as ingots to jewelers and investors as well as back to manufacturers who use gold in the circuit boards of mobile phones because gold conducts electricity even better than copper.

This is common in Japan as i read from the news but i personally do it myself too, but of course not for gold and expensive metals in them but for resale of the used cell phones. But after this information i think i might just keep few of them with heavy metals in them.:) also by the way you can sell your old phones at http://www.sellyourcell.com/ or if you wanna read more about the article here is the link for it:

It says that there is no coordination between the federal government and any water desalination. This could become a serious threat and should be taken more seriously.

Very small computer!

http://www.picotux.com/techdatae.html

This Linux computer is fully functional with 55 MHz. While this may seem slow, its really not that bad. You could do alot with 5 MHz. Many of the standard features like Word, and 3d programs can be ran on this computer. The funny thing is the power block... it is larger than the computer... might as well plug it in then.

New Oxygen Masks!!!

This oxygen creating mask looks pretty cool and high-tech. I think it would be very beneficial in many different fields of business. Originally made for a homeland security measure, this unique mask can also be used for such things as firefighters, chemical attacks and airplanes to keep the flight attendants mobile instead of using the heavy tanks installed in the plane's lining.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology will make computers smaller, cheaper, faster... Standard methods of computers are reaching their limits with magnets and computer processors. With this new technology of rearranging atoms, the sky is the limit. We are still very rough in this area however, but in time, we will figure it out. Imagine a doubling effect in capacity of nanotechnology every 18 months... crazy.

15 Minutes up for Microsoft SPOT Watches

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/90393

Microsoft's SPOT ("Smart Personal Objects Technology") watch was basically a PDA on your wrist. FM radio waves would allow the SPOT watch to access data feeds from MSN direct. You could configure your SPOT watch online to get weather reports, set stocks to track them and get real time automatic updates. The retail price of SPOT watches ranges from $150 to $200 and you would have to pay a $9.99 service fee per month. The problem for Microsoft is that currently, even a moderately simple phone has the capabilities of SPOT. The battery life was another issue with the watch. Battery life only lasted for 2 or 3 days. SPOT has produced minimal sales over the last 5 years; therefore, Microsoft is pulling the plug on this gadget. New cellphone technology is what ultimately sunk the SPOT watch.

Maybe?

Cuban Bloggers

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24316406/wid/11915829

I decided to do this article since it has to do with what we are doing right now...blogging. Cubans have just won the right to use computers but the government keeps most of the control over the internet. This article discusses one girl who dresses like a tourist and goes into a hotel with internet access to write her blog. This is very risky and she could get into a lot of trouble if she gets caught.

I think this is a very brave thing this girl is doing. She is risking her life to write this blog about her feelings. Since the government has changed recently, I hope to see them allowing more people to use the internet so people can view some blogs by other Cubans. Hopefully this girl does not get caught in the meantime.

Cell phones are getting smarter

Cell phone manufacturers are creating phones that possess the same capabilities as other phones such as iPhone or Blackberry. More keyboards are showing up in the new phones as well as the dual connection function. The quality of the phone cameras are improving. In the end, the cell phone can do everything except wash the dishes and still lag on reception and voice quality.

When is the cost of Blu-ray players coming down?

The cost of the average Blu-Ray player is coming down, but not fast enough for some people. The average cost is hovering around $350 and could be coming down below $300 soon. Searching for ways to improve office

Microsoft is releasing an office add-on called search commands that allows users to type functions that users are looking to perform. The public will have a chance to download this add-on and try it out after months of Microsofts internal testing. This download will not be available on the Microsoft website. You will need to search for it under office labs. Office labs is where Microsoft is testing out fresh new ideas. The purpose of office labs is to find out if these new ideas are ready for use in the mainstream product.

T-Mobile to carry Android phone by year's end

Cell phone service provider, T-mobile said that it will be offering a Google Android based cell phone by the end of the year.

This is the first company that is part of the Open Handset Alliance that has publically announed that it will carry a Android capable phone, where as other members, Verizon and Sprint have mention no word of adding a device to the list as of yet.

Joe Sim, vice president and general manager of T-Mobile said that at first they were, "skeptical, T-Mobile now views Android as a way to encourage innovation and customer choice.

The platform hopes to compete against AT&T's iPhone.

The Pirate Bay Smashes 12,000,000 BitTorrent Users

BitTorrent search-engine, The Pirate Bay, has had over 12 million users.  What this is telling us is that BitTorrent is growing more and more by the month.  It has already been said that around 80% of all Internet traffic is related to P2P connections, however these figures are changing as more and more people start using streaming video sites such as YouTube.

They are also saying that more and more people are sharing what they get off BitTorrent.  The number of people "seeding" or hosting files is around 50% of all users compared to around 25% when the service first began.  This also leads to the chance that more people will be getting caught for sharing copyrighted content illegally.

AT&T: Internet to hit full capacity by 2010

As the number of internet users rises and the amount of data being transferred around the world, the current Internet might have trouble keeping up with the demand and companies like AT&T believe that by 2010 it will reach its maximum limit.

U.K government officials have said that, "at least $55 billion worth of investment was needed in new infrastructure in the next three years in the U.S. alone." in order to help the network to be prepared for more users.

A Google Prototype for a Precision Image Search

Google is beginning to reveal more information about its new "VisualRank" application.

Currently when you search Google for an image it finds the image based off of the file name.  This technology will reference the keyword to the actual image in the photo, not just the file name. What this means is that Google is currently in the processes of developing better face detection and image detection technologies that will analyze a photo's contents and associate them with keywords.

They are looking into this technology in order to make their image searches more relevant to what people are looking for.

Dell to Sell XP after June 30, Microsoft to Pretend They're Selling Vista to Save Face

LINK!

Dell has said that it will continue to sell XP past the Microsoft cut-off date.

They will do this by offering customers the Business or Ultimate version of Vista that comes with its own "downgrade" license.  Basically a Windows XP license is included in Vista license with the mentioned versions.

This is great for those that are timid about using Vista, because if you do not like it you can go back to XP.

SDK Showdown: Apple IPhone vs. Google Android

Probably one of the biggest product success stories in the last year is Apple's iPhone.  Recently the Apple released the iPhone SDK which will allow for third-party applications to be run on the phone.   The applications will be available through the AppStore application which will come with the new iPhone 2.0 firmware.  The only problem is, is that Apple does not like competition and will be choosing the type of applications that it will distribute.  So if a developer makes a program than one the iPhone currently has it will not pass.

Google however has decided to take a different route with its Android SDK.  Android is Google's open source phone operating system that will be able to run on many devices and best of all anyone can write an application or operating system for it because like I said before it is completely open source.  Users will be able to tweak the inner workings of their phone to allow more customization.  This also creates a big problem for developers because they will have to tailor their code to work on many devices where as the iPhone applications only work with the iPhone.

New Electric car in the market!

A Norweigian car manufacturer plans to set its sights on selling their newly designed car in the United States. The car is called the "THiNK" and is said to hit the market in 2009. Finally, better airplane seats!

I have traveled to many distant places in economy class, and I am sure many of those who also travel, the seats in the airplanes are WAY too small. Especially for myself, since I am a little over six foot. The "Thompson Solutions Cozt Suite" is a new style in seating arrangement which is planned to be used by Delta Airlines. These new seats offer 31 inches in leg room, which is said to be 2 inches more than any other economy seat. The seat is also made to give more privacy and give you a place to lay your head against. However, the bad part is that these seats arn't expected to be used until 2010.

"New dating site caters to smarties only"

http://www.news.com/8301-13772_3-9927764-52.html?tag=cnetfd.mt

There is a new dating site that discriminates against people who are not "smart." This sounds like a joke to me, but apparently in order to sign up, you must pass the IQ test they have. And if you don't pass their admission requirement, you will not be able to join. I don't know if I would trust the admission process though, because the person signing up could be cheating and have someone else take the test for them. Or they could be looking up the answers as their taking the test.

Exabyte!

http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9915449-7.html?tag=bl

Exabyte = 1 billion Gigabytes! WOW! That is a lot.

The advances made in memory are amazing to me. But what is even better still, is that we have only scratched the surface of possibilities. IBM is working on creating a new concept for memory.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

Don't make computers seek out data. Make the data move to where it can be used.

That, roughly, is one way to describe the racetrack memory concept, which IBM argues could one day lead to memory that could hold 100 times more data than flash memory does today and cost 100 times less. So that 2GB card you bought for $20 this week would hold 200GB, or more than a lot of notebook hard drives, and cost 20 cents.

Also, e-commerce sales are estimated to surpass $200 billion this year and hit $300 billion by 2011.

Surf the web without a computer?

Sony and Poineer have been working and developing a web based remote control for your TV.
Having the internet connection on the TV allows the users easier access to adjust their picture and configuration settings over the web. "Even in your own house, I can imagine using a PC will be easier than the interminable button presses on today's unintuitive TV remote controls. But is this interface even meant for customers? A Web connection will theoretically let you control the set from anywhere." It also has an "ISF" screen, which is a special screen for a trained calibrator to make pro-level adjustments. A vacuum that kills germs

This new vacuum doesnt just suck up unwanted dirt and other things in your carpet. It can protect you and your family from unwanted germs. This new vacuum uses a germ-killing UV light that kills dust mite eggs, flee eggs, and other harmful bacteria. When completing a trial run over 60 dust mite eggs, only two eggs hatched, giving it a 97% kill rate. It gets even better from there because when tested for killing flee eggs, it killed 100% of the eggs after just one second of exposure from the UV light. The list of the different types of bacteria it kills goes on, but one thing if certain, that your home will be a lot cleaner, and you will have a lot less chance of getting sick, if you use one of these.

Opera Software's 9.5 Beta browser has a new feature called Quick Find that allows you to find the addresses of past websites much easier. All you need to do is type in a few words and a list of URLs from the past will come up.

HR info systems

http://www.pr.com/press-release/82122

This link will take you to an HR "Spring Cleaning" tips article. The part about going green and eliminating paper clutter caught my attention. I worked for a company which was in the process of going paperless using a really intricate program that utilized OCR which allowed you to search all documents. This is the way to go if you want to go paperless. If you remember anything about a document you can find it (person's name, date, words used in the document).

I think it is kind of barbaric how much paper we use in our society. The IRS is slowly getting there with online submissions (I believe should be mandatory soon...). It is absolutely possible to "go green" and save so much paper when we are living in an online, electronic world. Those who are frightened of the computer age are becoming more sparse (thankfully) so I think we must realize as a society that we can do so much more by utilizing our computers to their full potential.

The Two Day Laptop Battery

Recently, Stanford scientists developed a type of lithium ion battery that can last for two days! The new technology incorporates silicon nanowires into rechargable lithium ion batteries and extends the life of the battery from 4 to 40 hours. This new breakthrough is said to be incorporated into many of the highly popular mobile devices which need long battery life, such as ipods, iphones and videocameras. The new breakthrough is still in the testing stage since the concept is fairly new, so there is no expected date it will be released.

Laser Television

Mitsubishi has come out with a new design in television. The secret behind the new television technology is lasers. "Lasers can be tuned to the exact wavelength of light you like-down to the nanometer." This TV is said to be able to produce ideal shades of red, green, and blue. Mitsubishi claims this TV to be able to reproduce about 80% of all the colors humans can see. Televisions currently reproduce about 40% of all the colors humans can see. This new breakthrough in technology can be yours at the end of the year, the cost isn't revealed, but it is said to be somewhere around $6000 for a 50 inch.

Cellphone a la Carte

This new cell phone is like carrying multiple different types of phones. It has interchangeable shells that can transform the phone into a camera, or even add wireless connection to other gadgets. The thing that is special about this phone is the fact it is smaller than a credit card!! It is called the "Modu" and is one of the smallest, lightest cellphones yet. The Modu is going to be launched in Europe around October and will have several different shells. It is said to hit the United States late next year and will be able to plug into Magellan GPS units and Blaupunkt car audio systems.

PC Makers Find Ways to Extend XP's Life

http://www.news.com/8301-13860_3-9929405-56.html?tag=nefd.lede

The deadline to stop selling PC's with Windows XP is June 30th 2008. Hewlett-Packard and Dell will take advantage of a "downgrade right" that was offered as part of Windows Vista. This right will allow them to sell PC's with Windows XP well beyond the June 30th deadline. These machines will come with and option to upgrade to Vista for free if the customer would like to do so. These PC's will be allowed to be sold until June 30 of 2009.

This could be bad...

Finally, a USB turret device that will raise more than a laugh from those attacked by it, this Airsoft Turret is USB powered and shoots plastic BB’s at up to 250 fps! Raise some welts on the jerk in the next cubicle rather than pelting him with Nerf like darts that do noting but irritate. The builder suggests you can use it to control birds that try to relieve themselves on your car. I say it would also be a great item to help remind my moron neighbor that I can reach out and touch him at 2 am when he is blaring his radio. If you try this project, you will need to modify both the airsoft gun and USB turret extensively from the looks of it.

So imagine having this in the office. This coudl be dangerous, yes surprisingly fun. This could also raise a bad issue with repsonsibility. I mean what if someone gets onto your system and then shoots someone, is that your fault? I just thought it was cool and wanted some feedback, so comments welcome!

Wii Have A Problem

By Tom Zeller Jr.

Nintendo is highlighting some tips for using its Wii gaming console and its special remote. One tip for those in the same room as a Wii user: duck.

Seems customers are discovering that Nintendo’s new Wii gaming console, which debuted last month and has a signature game controller that responds to users’ body movements, may have an unintended side effect: game controllers flying around living rooms and smashing into lamps, windows, televisions and foreheads.

The wireless controller, called the Wii Remote, is designed to attach to the wrist with a strap, and permits users to emulate the motions of games they are playing — a bowling stroke, say, or a tennis serve. Many users, though, are apparently using the game with more enthusiasm, perhaps, than Nintendo’s testers anticipated, and they are apparently saying the strap breaks a bit too easily.
A user with sweaty palms claims the strap broke on her Wii Remote while playing a game of Tennis. The Remote ended up outdoors. She submitted her story to the Web site WiiHaveAProblem.com

A Web site, WiiHaveAProblem.com, has been documenting users’ tragic tales.

In a statement yesterday, Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, said “We are investigating. Some people are getting a lot more excited than we’d expected. We need to better communicate to people how to deal with Wii as a new form of entertainment.”

Toward that end, the company has highlighted some safety warnings on how to use the Wii remote on its Web site — showing the need for plenty of room and, perhaps more importantly, the need to take a break if you find yourself getting a bit too … excited:

Even while wearing the wrist strap, make sure you don’t let go of the Wii Remote during game play and do not use excessive motion. For example, in Wii Sports bowling, the proper way to let go of the ball while bowling is to release the “B” button on the Wii Remote — DO NOT LET GO OF THE Wii REMOTE ITSELF. If you are having so much fun that you start perspiring, take a moment to dry your hands. If you use excessive motion and let go of the Wii Remote, the wrist strap may break and you could lose control of the Wii Remote. This could injure people nearby or cause damage to other objects.

For those readers who are not “gamers” and are still having trouble visualizing just what’s happening in the world of Wii users, we leave you with this:

Why is it people are sur happy. The reasonb I like the game is because I enjoy making fun of my friends as they get sweaty. That is not the game manufactures fault people are silly. (I am watching my language so it is silly) If the only problem with the game is the strap, nintendo could just manufacter personalized straps, because not everyone needs them. I was impressed a simple hand unit could play a game. Now people are complaining about a piece of cloth. Silly silly people.
This was just funny:

Running Robot Invasion!!!

This is SWEET. I was talking with my boyfriend, and he showed me this:

This is amazing. In my books I have read aboiut future robots looking like humans and haveing the ability to do simple tasks. I did not relize we have even gotten this far. Yes the robot looks a bit goofy running, but hey give it time. We can do anything. Although whos idea was it to have a robot that could run? Random question, and was there any other funtions which is why there is this site:

for more info. Enjoy!!!

The most sophisticated technology

This is interesting because this says it is the most sophisticated technology you will ever pee on. I thought this was amusing, so why not blog about it. I think technology in normal human life is slowto come out. We just got to the point of being able to tell if you are pregnant 5 days earlier. Wahoo. Well you can now not only take a home pregnancy test, but a home drug test as well. We are all becoming a bit  paranoid and just making it easier for the next generation of teenagers to figure out ways to cheat of a drug test. Now I am just rambling. But that is Ok. Enjoy this funny clip.

Silly Cheerleaders

So this is the article:

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A former cheerleader from Leland High School was suspended from the squad after attending a raucous Halloween party two years ago. Now she's suing, NBC11's Stacey Ciauri reported.

The 17-year-old plaintiff, Jaimee Bruno, and her mother filed a sex discrimination lawsuit against Leland High School after they alleges that educators selectively suspended five female cheerleaders for attending a 2005 party, but took no action against the male athletes.

SLIDESHOW: Images From Case

Photos from the Halloween party were posted on MySpace, showing the cheerleaders dressed in scantily-clad costumes, along with other students drinking and smoking.

School officials said the cheerleaders signed a behavior contract that

was violated.

The girls missed the 2005 and 2006 cheerleading seasons, because the 12-month suspension started mid-season, Ciauri reported.

Bruno is seeking an unspecified amount in damages and reimbursement for attorney fees and other costs.

According to the lawsuit, the girls were initially told they were suspended because of the way they were dressed and because there was smoking and drinking at the party. The suit also alleges that in the past, photos of a naked male athlete were posted on MySpace, but Leland High took no action against the student.

Bruno is now taking classes at San Jose City College.

District Claims Jocks Punished Same As Cheerleaders

A spokeswoman for the San Jose Unified School District said Friday that, in contrast to the allegations made in a lawsuit, the male and female students from Leland High School who attended a controversial 2005 Halloween party were equally punished.

The mother of one of the kicked-off cheerleaders filed the lawsuit in Santa Clara County Superior Court alleging sex discrimination. The suit claims the male athletes who attended the party were not punished.

District spokeswoman Karen Fuqua said the boys were football players and football season had ended by the time school officials became aware of the party.

"They couldn't be removed from a team whose season no longer existed," Fuqua said.

The boys were suspended from participating in any other school sports for 12 months, the same period of time the girls were suspended from cheerleading, according to Fuqua.
I thought this was interersting. I think to many people are putting to much effort into myspace and things like that. It is a great way to keep track of people but when people see this as such a bad thing they feel the need to beat up other people, that is just kinda silly. Almost as bad as my spelling... Have a great day!

High def

So I dont know much abouttelevision so I was looking for a new tv and I thought this site was very helpfull. I wanted to see what was so special about high def television and this site not only helped me figure out the special features, it helped to see what I could get. Being a struggling college student I can not afford this but I thought it could help someone else... so here:

Handheld wind turbine generator.

This new handheld sized turbine provides enough power to recharge any of your handheld devices. The "HYmini" is a small device that can charge your small devices with only a little wind. Its cost is around $50.00 and it comes in three different colors. The bad part about this little gadget is that it first needs to be charged a little bit by a wall outlet, in order to get its internal rechargable battery "up to speed." It is also expandable, meaning you can purchese additional solar panels for it. This would be very useful to keep in your car, or take with you on long road trips.

iMatter

The Middle East Broadcasting Company (MBC) has just launched "iMatter", the first social networking site designed for Arab women, in Dubai. This was put on by an agency from the United Kingdom, Leftfield Digital, along with the site's sponsor, Pantene Shine. This site addresses very important cultural issues concerning the Arab women in this area. On a personal note, I like this idea. My father's side of the family is from the UAE, and my family keeps in contact with them, so I realize that there are certain issues that women like my cousins and aunts face that they would be more inclined to share about over this channel.

Qwests New Fiber Optic Network

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/145150/qwest_offers_speedy_internet_services.html

Qwest is offering a new fiber optic network to its residential and small-business users. The two packages they are offering is for 12mbps and 20mbps. This is pretty good news. It seems that more and more Internet service providers are offering faster and faster Internet speeds every year. Which makes sense considering that files sizes are getting bigger and more people are downloading files from the Internet which includes music and movies. Now we only need a redesigned Internet; one that can accommodate the growing number of users.

"Computer Scientists Develop Solutions For Long-term Storage Of Digital Data"

As the title of the article suggests, scientists have developed a new way of storing long-term data. Graduate students at UCSC, along with an associate professor there, teamed up to develop "Pergamum", which is a network of storage devices that use very little power (under 13 watts), has two levels of redundancy (security measure), and ultimate compatability with future methods of networking.

RIM developing "Apple Killer"

http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/27/rim-developing-apple-killer-touchscreen-blackberry/

I have always liked RIM's blackberry phones and I think in recent years they have been getting a lot better. It seems that RIM has a product in development that should rival the iPhone. The problem is that it's going to be hard to make a product that's better than the iPhone. Not to say that the iPhone is perfect or anywhere near that, but the iPhone is a pretty solid product, and it's only going to get better this summer when Apple releases the new iPhone line. To hear the term "Apple Killer" seems familiar. I remember a lot of posts floating around last year saying something like "iPod Killer" before Microsoft released the Zune. Hopefully, RIM's new product stays true to the rumors and actually releases something amazing.

New Way to Hack Oracle Database

Researcher David Litchfield recently uncovered a new way for hackers to gain access to the Oracle database. The process has been dubbed "a lateral SQL injection", and can be described as an attack using date and number data types to trick the database into running SQL commands. Litchfield remarked that in order for database programmers to avoid this scenario, they need to make sure that all of their data is "not injected with SQL commands".

Bloggers offer glimpse of uncensored Cuba

Those who dare post about life in communist-run country By Andrea Rodriguez

I thought this was an interesting article, and involves bloggers in Cuba. They post information about living in the communist country, from anything to what they wear, how much people make, and their right to use the internet. It has only been one month since a law passed allowing Cuban's to even own a computer. Now they are blogging and spilling all....

"Apple earnings jump on Mac sales"

http://www.news.com/8301-13579_3-9927157-37.html?tag=cnetfd.mt

Apple has been doing very well this year, despite the slow growth of iPod sales, which only had a 1 percent unit growth and 8 percent revenue growth. However, the Mac is what is getting all the rave. Mac sales has gone up by 51 percent compared to the same period last year. Revenues from Mac have increased by 54 percent. For some reason, Macs are becoming more popular nowadays compared to Windows. I think a lot of it has to do with the younger generation getting into Macs for its incredible multimedia features.

"What's next for the Nintendo DS"

http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9927765-1.html?tag=cnetfd.mt

It looks like sales for the Nintendo DS have dropped and are expected to drop even more. Nintendo predicts that sales could fall from 30.3 million to about 28 million. My reasoning for this could be that the improvements in the technology of phones and PDAs have had an affect on handheld game systems. There is so much more you can do with a phone on top of playing games that people have steered away from buying handhelds such as the DS. Why spend money on something that can only do one thing when you can get a phone that does multiple things.

Is now the time to buy consumer electronics?

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/90385

Richard Gikes, executive director of the Home Theater Specialists of America, states that now is the best time to buy consumer electronics. The reasons for this are linked to China. The cheap labor days in China are coming to an end because of new labor and worker protection laws. This has pushed labor costs up 15 percent. The price of materials used in making electronics, such as components and metals, have also gone up. Product supply is going to be low because factories are shutting down in June to clear the air for the Olympics. Another reason why now is best to buy consumer electronics is because of the depreciating U.S. dollar. The dollar has fallen 10 percent against the Chinese yuan. This is bad news because the majority of consumer electronics are produced in China. As a result, prices are going to be on the rise in order to increase profits.

Projector or TV

With the increasing costs of the panel TV's, people are turning to more affordable projectors. The projector can cost as little as $200 and as much as $10,000 for a high quality picture. The size of the picture with the projector can be much larger but there is a sacrifice in quality as you do so.

Your printer: An open door for hackers?

I never really thought that using a printer to fax things can be such a risky process. This article gave an example of a secretary inadvertently sending medical records to a local gasoline station rather than its correct location. That can have some important personal information. There are so many ways that one can take your identity! Be careful and I hope that people who are faxing our info is being careful as well!

INTERACTIVE SECURITY SYSTEM

Want to do more then just surprise burglars with a loud security system? This invention can zap criminals with taser, pepper gas, scent or dye via onsite trip or remote attendant. “A U.S. Patent has been granted 16 claims which provides for indoor usage including vehicles”. This is the greatest thing ever; this device gives us the chance to get back at thieves before the cops get a chance to take them in. Criminals better watch out when they come around my house because I already put my order in for this product.

Plate Flipper

The Plate Flipper is a device that hooks to your car's license plate, and allows the driver to flip down, and reveal a special message for anybody behind you. I think that this devise had to be created by a criminal. I just don’t see how this devise could be legal. I imagine it can also be used avoid paying tolls on toll roads, allowing you to evade the cameras every where. What about people using their car as a get away vehicle, what happens when they take off and you run outside to get the license plate it flips over and says “Ha Ha”. This product should obviously be band.

Night Light In The Toilet

Ladies are you tired of waking up in the middle of the night and going to use the bathroom to find that your man has left the toilet seat up once again. Well with the new Automatic Toilet Seat Night Light you won’t have to worry about falling in the toilet ever again. This device lights up the bowl when the lid is up and turns off automatically when the lid is lowered. Not only will this toilet bowl technology keep people from falling in the toilet, it is ideal for toilet training.

Glow Rug

I refuse to be a victim of nighttime toe stubbing! At night when I get out of bed I need something to keep me from walking into things. The nightlight is too immature for me. I used it for a while but I had to pull the plug after being accused of being afraid of the dark. A rug that lights up when you step on it is just what I need. Invented by two engineering students at London South Bank University, the rug uses electroluminescence to glow under the weight of a foot. Sheer Genius!

The End of Exploding Laptops

Are you tired of your notebook spontaneously bursting into flames all the time? Me to! Researchers in Germany are developing a fire-proof lithium-ion battery to help solve this problem. They are trying to improve the conductivity of the new polymer; they figure that it's going to be three to five years before this new breed of battery finds its way into consumer devices. I can not wait to buy a laptop with one of these batteries; no longer will I be a victim of exploding notebooks!

New pint-sized robot can help with chores around the house, and assist in emergencies

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts are developing a robot that can help the elderly in their homes. The robot has an LCD screen, a webcam, and a wireless connection to the Internet. The biggest value it can bring to a household is its ability to call for help if there is any kind of problem. The only thing I do not like about this invention is that it will take away some of the vital human interaction that the elderly are already in dire need of.

Fighting Poverty With Technology

MIT professor Martin Fisher and his team at KickStart, a nonprofit, invented the pump for small-scale farmers. The pump cost about $100 dollars and it can irrigate about two acres of land. It is human powered and very easy to use, which allows farmers to irrigate all year around, instead of waiting for the rain. The significance of this new invention is that new technology is not always electronic or controlled by a computer.
