How to Identify Bad CIOs in Their Natural Habitat
I wanted to get this last post in toward the closing of this blog to bring more "value" to this little article I am posting. I think it has a lot of value for those working in the real world. Pretty much the article tells you the common traits and characteristics of bad or deceptive CIOs. For each suggestion of advice mentioned in the article there is a real-life account of CIOs that have followed each of these trends. Most importantly, it tells you what to avoid doing when you become a CIO yourself.
Here's to the closing of the MIS Spring 2008 Blog.

The WB returning for online videos
In an effort to attract younger viewers, Warner Bros. is relaunching The WB. But, this time it will be an online video effort rather than broadcast television. The website feature some of the WB's original programs like the show "Friends". The website is intended to target 16-34 year olds. I think this is a good move by Warner Bros. because online video programming is becoming much more popular. As internet speeds get faster, people can stream much larger video files which ultimately means higher video quality. I think that video quality is always going to be a battle for online video programmers, but it recent years it has definately gotten better.

Crash avoidance technologies: Benefit or distraction?
Advances in car safety features, such as electronic stability control (ESC) have been proven to save lives and will be standard on all vehicles by the 2012 model year. Now a host a new safety features are making their way to the market place. Will these technologies be as widespread as ESC and become significant life saving features or will they become a distraction to drivers? A recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) takes a look at five new features and crash data from 2002-2006 to see how they can help prevent crashes.
Two features, forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, are the most promising of these new technologies at helping to avoid crashes. Forward-collision warning helps to prevent front impacts by alerting drivers of the potential hazard with alarms, flashing lights, and/or on some vehicles, automatically applying the brakes.
There are more than two million front crashes—that’s 40 percent of the total number of crashes in a given year. If some of these crashes and the over 7,000 deaths that occurred from them could be prevented, then the potential benefit from this safety feature could significantly reduce injuries, related medical costs, emergency services, and repair bills. However, the IIHS warns that if drivers rely too much on technology to help them out or decide not to heed the warnings, then the benefit wouldn’t be as great.
Lane-departure warning alerts drivers, using a vibrating steering wheel, audible tone, or visual notice if they are moving out of their lane when a turn signal isn’t activated. In the period reviewed, there were almost 500,000 crashes per year and over 10,000 deaths from these accidents. A 2004 report from IIHS shows that textured pavement, known as rumble strips, have reduced head-on crashes and side swipes by 25 to 30 percent. If lane departure warning works just as well, the IIHS points out that feature could potentially eliminate more than 100,000 accidents and 2,500 deaths.
Three other safety features—blind-spot detection, adaptive headlights, and emergency brake assistance were also evaluated. Blind-spot detection helps keep track of vehicles in a blind spot by alerting drivers through a light by the side mirror or in some models, a beep. As my colleague Jim Travers notes in his recent blog, this warning can be distracting to drivers and can be turned off. There are 450,000 blind-spot-related crashes per year, but only a small number involve fatalities, limiting the benefit.
Adaptive headlights help drivers see better in nighttime driving by moving in the direction of the steering, but according to the IIHS, several studies show that drivers speed up when there are reflector posts or markers that indicate curves in the road. If this is the case, then drivers may also speed up if they have adaptive headlights.
Finally, emergency brake assist senses panic braking and prepares the brakes for extra pressure. This feature overlaps with the forward-collision warning and both systems are intended to prevent frontal crashes, so many of the crashes could be avoided by just the forward-collision warning, says the IIHS report.
Most of these technologies are relatively new and not available from all manufacturers. Volvo is the only manufacturer with all five technologies on some of its models, but other upscale brands such as BMW, Cadillac, and Mercedes-Benz are testing out some of these features. A recent Harris poll reveals that consumers showed an interest in purchasing blind-spot detection and lane-departure warning features, but the study also found that drivers still want control of their vehicles. Other studies show that automatic features tend to be the most effective as we have seen with existing features such as ESC and antilock brakes.
Only time will tell if these new safety features will reduce crashes and save lives, or if they may rely too much on driver response and become more of a distraction than a safety tool. Consumers shopping for a new vehicle should become familiar with the latest safety systems and seek models equipped with proven features, such as antilock brakes, side- and curtain air bags, and stability control. This latest report suggests that forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning systems are worth considering, as well.

So this is the article, i thought it was interesting. I the world progessrtessing to fast for us. I think so. people depend on technology to much to do simple things. How hard is it to look behind you to back up. Do you really need a beep to tell you somthing is there. Whynot just be aware and know, hey there is a curb, I should not drive over it. it is not difficult. i am asian, I have an excuse for driving badly, however I do not need it. I do not need fancy equipment to tell me I will run over a curb. i use my eyes.
Projection of Technology failures in 2008
1. Facebooks problem lies in its loss of private user information through a ad system it uses called beacon. This may have damaged themselves by seemingly valuing the ad company over users.
2. Wkipedia is being challenged by a similar open-sourec search engine called google knol. Here academics are allowed to contribute making information more transparent. Google is king and it is looking like google will take down wikipedia in the open-sorce search engine world.
3. On the other hand google may suffer from stretching itself too thin in followingventures into renewable energy research.
4. Second life is sinking. Don't know what it is as no evedence is provided.
5. Lastly are all dating websites. People are tiring of online dating and eurn for personal interaction.

Virgin Airlines Uses IT to Boost VIP Customer Satisfaction
This whole information gathering revolution that's occurring in the marketplace today is a catch-22 in my opinion. On one hand, it increases the level of customer service, but on the other hand, the employees of the companies that you deal with on an everyday basis now have access to your personal information. Scary thought...

PDAs to track Olympic VIPs in Beijing
VIPs will be handed a handheld gps device, called EventTrack, which will allow them to navigate around Beijing during the times of the Olympics. Besides being a GPS unit, VIPs will be able to use the unit to send messages for pick up and drop off locations. Because the Olympics are a world wide event, planners have said that they will be able to change the language of the device to be compatible to specific VIPs. The device will try and solve two problems Olympic planners are trying to avoid: traffic and security.
How do the planners actually decide who is considered a VIP? It seems that if you are invited to participate in the Olympics, you should be considered a VIP. Also, China should also do more than hand out gps devices to protect athletes for security purposes. There is so many more things that can and will need to be done to protect everyone on the scurity level.

Zap to do three-wheeled car in 2009
Zap, an electric car based company in Santa Rosa, California is planning on introducing a three wheeled car called the Alias in 2009. The car is said to be able to top speeds of 100 mpg and will be able to go upto 150 miles on a single charge. The price tag for the car is said to be $30,000. A benefit of the the car being three wheeled instead of four wheeled, it will be able to go farther than its four wheeled counter part since it is lighter in weight. For the Alias, Zap is currently working with China's Youngman Automotive Group to produce this car. Another advantage it has is that it can get to the market faster because it will be classified as a motorcycle and will have less regulations to get through. Besides the Alias, Zap also has other projects in the works to hopefully help the country go greener.
This is just another company that is trying get in the "Go Green" trend. Not till the cars are out can we tell if the company is a success or not. Of course there will be those individuals who will buy these vehicles just to be the first on the block to have the newest toy.

BlackBerry's quest: Fend off the iPhone
Even though RIM has significant amount of the smartphone market, the introduction of the Iphone has decreased it its market share from 45 percent to 40 percent. There are many things that are planned in the future for the Iphone, but RIM is hoping to keep battling to be a top dog in the smartphone market. The increase of the popularity is shown in Fortune 500 companies. One-third of those companies has said that it is interested in giving Iphones to their employees. In June, Apple is expected to release their new 3G version of the Iphone which will again compete with the RIM phones that are released in the same time period.
It seems as if the consumers for RIM and the Iphone are from different sides. It just depends on if you need it as more of a computer type or for entertainment. The Iphone is more for entertainment, while RIM phones are more for business type people who need to check their schedules constantly.
Plastic Blood Cells?
Because of the small size of red blood cells and the demanding work they do, nobody has succeeded in making artificial versions to help people with such conditions.
Now though Joseph DeSimone, a chemical engineer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US, thinks he knows how.
He has created tiny sacks of the polymer polyethylene glycol just 8 micrometres across – in the range of human red blood cells – that are capable of deforming in a way that allows them to pass through the tiniest capillaries."
This article is very intriguing with the ability to replicate human cells in an artifical form that will help patients with certain diseases.

Beermenus.com, where have you been all my life?
Beermenus.com is a terrific website that shows the type of beer's that a particular place carries. Along with the beer menu's, this website also lists special events that are upcoming at particular places. Currently, the website only serves those in the New York area. However, the site plans to expand as soon as it can. There are other websites that are similar to it, but this website lists both the beer menu's, as well as the events going on.
At the moment this is a great website for those in the New York area, but when this website does expand to more cities, it could have the possibility of becoming a MySpace type website. The website seems to be a very helpful in deciding which place to go to on a Friday or Saturday night instead of driving around from place to place.

The push for 802.11n
A company called Aruba Networks is producing some innovative hardware and software. They're offering Wi-Fi access points for business that have the ability support the new wireless protocol, 802.11n, via a software update. The idea is that, business who use 802.11 b/g can use Aruba Networks products and if they plan to upgrade to 802.11n they won't have to buy new access points, instead they will just need upgrade their access points through a software update.
Apple Refreshes iMac Line
It's always exciting to see what new products Apple is going to release. This article talks about Apples update to the iMac lineup. a couple notable features in this update is the top speed of its top of line system and their take on the enviornment. The top of the line iMacs feature a top speed of 3.06 GHz and the computer system is made of "highly recyclable and durable materials including scratch-resistant glass and professional grade aluminum." It's good to see some companies really paying attention to the enviornment. If you like Apple products, then check out their updated line for the iMac.
AT&T: Internet to hit full capacity by 2010
The vice president of legislative affairs for AT&T, Jim Cicconi, has said that the internet will pushing close to the full capacity of the internet by 2010. He was saying that by 2010, 20 households will be producing more amount of internet traffic than the entire internet today. When videos begin to be uploaded or downloaded in HD is when we will begin to see more of an increase in the amount of traffic that is being used. HD video's are will use a significantely more amount of bandwith then the current videos that are being used today.
It is amazing to see that we are actually pushing the limits of the internet. I'm sure that before, the internet was seen as something that had no limitations, but of course we have gotten a little greedy and push the internet to it limits. Hopefully, something can be down were the internet is imporved without putting more costs than necessary to the consumers.
Coming soon: Movies on flash memory cards
Move over blockbuster, netflix, and any other movie renters. There is a possible new way of renting movies coming to a kiosk near you. Company founder of Portomedia, Chris Armstrong, is planning introduce a new way to buy or rent videos in a faster and more efficient way. Consumers will able to buy or rent a movie by downloading it to a flash drive or memory card. A kiosk will have hard drives that will be able to hold anywhere from 350 to 5,000 movies. A customer will just plug in there flash drive or memory card, enter there pin code, and choose which movie they want to download. Copyright licenses will be no problem since Armstrong has gotten the okay from major studios to build the library for his business.
This seems like a great idea because if you have been to a Hollywood Video or Blockbuster on a Friday or Saturday night, it seems like it takes forever to get in line and pay for your rentals. Downloading the movies to a memory card will take somewhere around 60 seconds, which is significantly less time. This is a great idea and should be coming to the United States soon.
Want a plug-in hybrid? Get in line for a battery
2004-2008 Toyota Prius can preorder a battery for their hybrid cars that would allow them to charge it, which in turn would increase their miles per gallon. A123 Systems is the manufacturere of the battery and they have created a website were Pirus owners can try and reserve there battery when it is released by A123 Systems. The battery is called the Hymotion 5 and it is built to be put in the location of where the spare tire would normally be. This battery would increase the miles per gallon from about 40 to about 100. The price tag on this battery is pretty steap to at $9,995, plus $400 for shipping charges.
With gas prices probably reaching $4 a gallon here in San Diego, Prius owners have another alternative of increasing there already great mpg. This could also get more prospective car buyers to lean towards the Toyota Prius to get more bang for their buck. Even though the price for the battery seems pretty steap, it looks like a good idea right now because there is no telling when the price of gas is going to be going down. As of right now, it does not look like it is going to be happening anytime soon.
iPhone a flop in Europe, but why?
The iPhone has been a huge success here in the U.S. but its not the case in Europe. Actual sales have been much less than projected there. Reasons why include cost of the iPhone, cost of service, competition from Nokia and performance. The iPhone in France costs 749 euros ($1,200) and service runs up to 119 euros ($189) a month. The cost of purchasing an iPhone exceeds the cost of purchasing most laptops! Another issue is competition from Nokia. Nokia has not been a major competitor in the U.S. but it has taken a big part in the European market. The iPhone in Europe has created terrible word of mouth due to its performance. The iPhone is very slow and Europeans are used to their 3G phones that have been there for years.

Urban miners look for precious metals in cell phones
It's called "urban mining," scavenging through the scrap metal in old electronic products in search of such gems as iridium and gold, and it is a growth industry around the world as metal prices skyrocket.
The materials recovered are reused in new electronics parts and the gold and other precious metals are melted down and sold as ingots to jewelers and investors as well as back to manufacturers who use gold in the circuit boards of mobile phones because gold conducts electricity even better than copper.
This is common in Japan as i read from the news but i personally do it myself too, but of course not for gold and expensive metals in them but for resale of the used cell phones. But after this information i think i might just keep few of them with heavy metals in them.:) also by the way you can sell your old phones at http://www.sellyourcell.com/ or if you wanna read more about the article here is the link for it:

Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology will make computers smaller, cheaper, faster... Standard methods of computers are reaching their limits with magnets and computer processors. With this new technology of rearranging atoms, the sky is the limit. We are still very rough in this area however, but in time, we will figure it out. Imagine a doubling effect in capacity of nanotechnology every 18 months... crazy.
Unicode
We would not be able to get through our day without the little "magicians" working behind closed doors. Unicode defines a number for every letter in up to 30 languages so far. Think of it as the Rosetta Stone for computers. Most of us will never understand it but it is what is making computing on the internet what it is today...
A new MOUSE!! YOUR FACE!!!!
First designed for the handicapped, a man has invented some technology that sees your nose a the pointer and guide on the screen and your eyes blinking as the mouse click. He says that he can see everyone using this technology in the future because of how precise and easy to use it is.... I do not know if I want to blink two times every time I select a folder though...
A computer that runs your house...
For years computer companies have been trying to unite technology in your house with the home computer. Offering a computer that is used through your TV has just not caught on yet though. They want people to be able to conduct business through the TV, using its speakers, while you sit in your favorite lazy chair. Now, new improvements with wireless video transfers might change the publics ideas about incorporating this idea into your daily life...
LASIK surgery techno improvements
New technology improvements are limiting far sightedness after the surgery. These improvements make the system more sensitive so the hardware can make subtle corrections in the eye to truly achieve perfect vision. Before, an improvement was guaranteed but perfection was rarely attained. So, for those of you with contacts... give them a call. Technology has caught up with our eyes.
Release of GTA 4
With Xbox Live bringing on completely new servers to compensate for the upcoming release of this series. The graphics are supposed to be a large improvement from its predecessors and also offers online teams. This is possible via Live accounts where you can meet up with friends through system links and go at liberty city.
Batphones.... haha
This has to be the most ridiculous bit of technology for the hearing impaired out on the market. They really do not word all that well. You might as well be wearing a bra on your head, that is just about what the device looks like anyway. Maybe if this were about a hundred years ago this would be a good idea, but by todays standards; no way.
15 Minutes up for Microsoft SPOT Watches
Microsoft's SPOT ("Smart Personal Objects Technology") watch was basically a PDA on your wrist. FM radio waves would allow the SPOT watch to access data feeds from MSN direct. You could configure your SPOT watch online to get weather reports, set stocks to track them and get real time automatic updates. The retail price of SPOT watches ranges from $150 to $200 and you would have to pay a $9.99 service fee per month. The problem for Microsoft is that currently, even a moderately simple phone has the capabilities of SPOT. The battery life was another issue with the watch. Battery life only lasted for 2 or 3 days. SPOT has produced minimal sales over the last 5 years; therefore, Microsoft is pulling the plug on this gadget. New cellphone technology is what ultimately sunk the SPOT watch.
Cuban Bloggers
I decided to do this article since it has to do with what we are doing right now...blogging. Cubans have just won the right to use computers but the government keeps most of the control over the internet. This article discusses one girl who dresses like a tourist and goes into a hotel with internet access to write her blog. This is very risky and she could get into a lot of trouble if she gets caught.
I think this is a very brave thing this girl is doing. She is risking her life to write this blog about her feelings. Since the government has changed recently, I hope to see them allowing more people to use the internet so people can view some blogs by other Cubans. Hopefully this girl does not get caught in the meantime.

"New dating site caters to smarties only"
There is a new dating site that discriminates against people who are not "smart." This sounds like a joke to me, but apparently in order to sign up, you must pass the IQ test they have. And if you don't pass their admission requirement, you will not be able to join. I don't know if I would trust the admission process though, because the person signing up could be cheating and have someone else take the test for them. Or they could be looking up the answers as their taking the test.
Exabyte!
Exabyte = 1 billion Gigabytes! WOW! That is a lot.
The advances made in memory are amazing to me. But what is even better still, is that we have only scratched the surface of possibilities. IBM is working on creating a new concept for memory.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
Don't make computers seek out data. Make the data move to where it can be used.
That, roughly, is one way to describe the racetrack memory concept, which IBM argues could one day lead to memory that could hold 100 times more data than flash memory does today and cost 100 times less. So that 2GB card you bought for $20 this week would hold 200GB, or more than a lot of notebook hard drives, and cost 20 cents.
"Just for messaging: Cell phones with keyboards that aren't smartphones"
QWERTY keyboards were first used only on computers. Then they made their ways to smartphones. But now they have made there way to basic phones as well. Text messaging has become so popular that cell phone manufacturers feel it is necessary to equip as many of their phones with QWERTY keyboards as they can.
Google and E-Commerce
Here are some quotes from this article which emphasize the presence of e-commerce:
"According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau figures, e-commerce sales have experienced a steady uptick since the turn of the century, estimated at $136.4 billion in 2007--an increase of 19.0 percent over 2006."
Also, e-commerce sales are estimated to surpass $200 billion this year and hit $300 billion by 2011.

"Even in your own house, I can imagine using a PC will be easier than the interminable button presses on today's unintuitive TV remote controls. But is this interface even meant for customers? A Web connection will theoretically let you control the set from anywhere." It also has an "ISF" screen, which is a special screen for a trained calibrator to make pro-level adjustments. It doesnt stop there, many other features are said to be added to this web based TV service.

A website called Printable Paper allows you to download one of there hundreds of templates and print it free of charge. They offer anything from college-ruled to graph paper templates, and even blank sheets of music. Although the templates are free, you must take into consideration that you have to use your own paper and ink, so you might be better off buying it from the store if you need a lot.
BOM
BOM (Bill of Materials) I found this site which compares different BOM softwares. I was surprised to see that the price range on one goes up to $300,000!
Why not just use Microsoft Access? What does the class think? Of course you would have to consider that this software comes with a lot more features than Access. This comes back to the question about weighing the cost of the software against the benefits you will receive from using the software.

"Opera 9.5 Beta 2 adds neat URL look-up"
There have been so many instances when I have visited a website and tried to go back to it at a later time, but cold not remember the URL. So I would have to dig through the history of visited websites hoping I would find what I was looking for. But I no longer have to go through the hassle of doing that. Opera Software's 9.5 Beta browser has a new feature called Quick Find that allows you to find the addresses of past websites much easier. All you need to do is type in a few words and a list of URLs from the past will come up.
HR info systems
This link will take you to an HR "Spring Cleaning" tips article. The part about going green and eliminating paper clutter caught my attention. I worked for a company which was in the process of going paperless using a really intricate program that utilized OCR which allowed you to search all documents. This is the way to go if you want to go paperless. If you remember anything about a document you can find it (person's name, date, words used in the document).
I think it is kind of barbaric how much paper we use in our society. The IRS is slowly getting there with online submissions (I believe should be mandatory soon...). It is absolutely possible to "go green" and save so much paper when we are living in an online, electronic world. Those who are frightened of the computer age are becoming more sparse (thankfully) so I think we must realize as a society that we can do so much more by utilizing our computers to their full potential.

PC Makers Find Ways to Extend XP's Life
The deadline to stop selling PC's with Windows XP is June 30th 2008. Hewlett-Packard and Dell will take advantage of a "downgrade right" that was offered as part of Windows Vista. This right will allow them to sell PC's with Windows XP well beyond the June 30th deadline. These machines will come with and option to upgrade to Vista for free if the customer would like to do so. These PC's will be allowed to be sold until June 30 of 2009.
This could be bad...

Finally, a USB turret device that will raise more than a laugh from those attacked by it, this Airsoft Turret is USB powered and shoots plastic BB’s at up to 250 fps! Raise some welts on the jerk in the next cubicle rather than pelting him with Nerf like darts that do noting but irritate. The builder suggests you can use it to control birds that try to relieve themselves on your car. I say it would also be a great item to help remind my moron neighbor that I can reach out and touch him at 2 am when he is blaring his radio. If you try this project, you will need to modify both the airsoft gun and USB turret extensively from the looks of it.
So imagine having this in the office. This coudl be dangerous, yes surprisingly fun. This could also raise a bad issue with repsonsibility. I mean what if someone gets onto your system and then shoots someone, is that your fault? I just thought it was cool and wanted some feedback, so comments welcome!

Wii Have A Problem

Nintendo is highlighting some tips for using its Wii gaming console and its special remote. One tip for those in the same room as a Wii user: duck.
Seems customers are discovering that Nintendo’s new Wii gaming console, which debuted last month and has a signature game controller that responds to users’ body movements, may have an unintended side effect: game controllers flying around living rooms and smashing into lamps, windows, televisions and foreheads.
The wireless controller, called the Wii Remote, is designed to attach to the wrist with a strap, and permits users to emulate the motions of games they are playing — a bowling stroke, say, or a tennis serve. Many users, though, are apparently using the game with more enthusiasm, perhaps, than Nintendo’s testers anticipated, and they are apparently saying the strap breaks a bit too easily.
A user with sweaty palms claims the strap broke on her Wii Remote while playing a game of Tennis. The Remote ended up outdoors. She submitted her story to the Web site WiiHaveAProblem.com
A Web site, WiiHaveAProblem.com, has been documenting users’ tragic tales.
In a statement yesterday, Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, said “We are investigating. Some people are getting a lot more excited than we’d expected. We need to better communicate to people how to deal with Wii as a new form of entertainment.”
Toward that end, the company has highlighted some safety warnings on how to use the Wii remote on its Web site — showing the need for plenty of room and, perhaps more importantly, the need to take a break if you find yourself getting a bit too … excited:
Even while wearing the wrist strap, make sure you don’t let go of the Wii Remote during game play and do not use excessive motion. For example, in Wii Sports bowling, the proper way to let go of the ball while bowling is to release the “B” button on the Wii Remote — DO NOT LET GO OF THE Wii REMOTE ITSELF. If you are having so much fun that you start perspiring, take a moment to dry your hands. If you use excessive motion and let go of the Wii Remote, the wrist strap may break and you could lose control of the Wii Remote. This could injure people nearby or cause damage to other objects.
For those readers who are not “gamers” and are still having trouble visualizing just what’s happening in the world of Wii users, we leave you with this:
Why is it people are sur happy. The reasonb I like the game is because I enjoy making fun of my friends as they get sweaty. That is not the game manufactures fault people are silly. (I am watching my language so it is silly) If the only problem with the game is the strap, nintendo could just manufacter personalized straps, because not everyone needs them. I was impressed a simple hand unit could play a game. Now people are complaining about a piece of cloth. Silly silly people.
This was just funny:
Running Robot Invasion!!!
This is amazing. In my books I have read aboiut future robots looking like humans and haveing the ability to do simple tasks. I did not relize we have even gotten this far. Yes the robot looks a bit goofy running, but hey give it time. We can do anything. Although whos idea was it to have a robot that could run? Random question, and was there any other funtions which is why there is this site:

Silly Cheerleaders
I thought this was interersting. I think to many people are putting to much effort into myspace and things like that. It is a great way to keep track of people but when people see this as such a bad thing they feel the need to beat up other people, that is just kinda silly. Almost as bad as my spelling... Have a great day!
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A former cheerleader from Leland High School was suspended from the squad after attending a raucous Halloween party two years ago. Now she's suing, NBC11's Stacey Ciauri reported.
The 17-year-old plaintiff, Jaimee Bruno, and her mother filed a sex discrimination lawsuit against Leland High School after they alleges that educators selectively suspended five female cheerleaders for attending a 2005 party, but took no action against the male athletes.
SLIDESHOW: Images From Case
Photos from the Halloween party were posted on MySpace, showing the cheerleaders dressed in scantily-clad costumes, along with other students drinking and smoking.
School officials said the cheerleaders signed a behavior contract that
was violated.
The girls missed the 2005 and 2006 cheerleading seasons, because the 12-month suspension started mid-season, Ciauri reported.
Bruno is seeking an unspecified amount in damages and reimbursement for attorney fees and other costs.
According to the lawsuit, the girls were initially told they were suspended because of the way they were dressed and because there was smoking and drinking at the party. The suit also alleges that in the past, photos of a naked male athlete were posted on MySpace, but Leland High took no action against the student.
Bruno is now taking classes at San Jose City College.
District Claims Jocks Punished Same As Cheerleaders
A spokeswoman for the San Jose Unified School District said Friday that, in contrast to the allegations made in a lawsuit, the male and female students from Leland High School who attended a controversial 2005 Halloween party were equally punished.
The mother of one of the kicked-off cheerleaders filed the lawsuit in Santa Clara County Superior Court alleging sex discrimination. The suit claims the male athletes who attended the party were not punished.
District spokeswoman Karen Fuqua said the boys were football players and football season had ended by the time school officials became aware of the party.
"They couldn't be removed from a team whose season no longer existed," Fuqua said.
The boys were suspended from participating in any other school sports for 12 months, the same period of time the girls were suspended from cheerleading, according to Fuqua.

Handheld wind turbine generator.

This new handheld sized turbine provides enough power to recharge any of your handheld devices. The "HYmini" is a small device that can charge your small devices with only a little wind. Its cost is around $50.00 and it comes in three different colors. The bad part about this little gadget is that it first needs to be charged a little bit by a wall outlet, in order to get its internal rechargable battery "up to speed." It is also expandable, meaning you can purchese additional solar panels for it. This would be very useful to keep in your car, or take with you on long road trips.

Qwests New Fiber Optic Network
Qwest is offering a new fiber optic network to its residential and small-business users. The two packages they are offering is for 12mbps and 20mbps. This is pretty good news. It seems that more and more Internet service providers are offering faster and faster Internet speeds every year. Which makes sense considering that files sizes are getting bigger and more people are downloading files from the Internet which includes music and movies. Now we only need a redesigned Internet; one that can accommodate the growing number of users.

RIM developing "Apple Killer"
I have always liked RIM's blackberry phones and I think in recent years they have been getting a lot better. It seems that RIM has a product in development that should rival the iPhone. The problem is that it's going to be hard to make a product that's better than the iPhone. Not to say that the iPhone is perfect or anywhere near that, but the iPhone is a pretty solid product, and it's only going to get better this summer when Apple releases the new iPhone line. To hear the term "Apple Killer" seems familiar. I remember a lot of posts floating around last year saying something like "iPod Killer" before Microsoft released the Zune. Hopefully, RIM's new product stays true to the rumors and actually releases something amazing.

"Apple earnings jump on Mac sales"
Apple has been doing very well this year, despite the slow growth of iPod sales, which only had a 1 percent unit growth and 8 percent revenue growth. However, the Mac is what is getting all the rave. Mac sales has gone up by 51 percent compared to the same period last year. Revenues from Mac have increased by 54 percent. For some reason, Macs are becoming more popular nowadays compared to Windows. I think a lot of it has to do with the younger generation getting into Macs for its incredible multimedia features.
"What's next for the Nintendo DS"
It looks like sales for the Nintendo DS have dropped and are expected to drop even more. Nintendo predicts that sales could fall from 30.3 million to about 28 million. My reasoning for this could be that the improvements in the technology of phones and PDAs have had an affect on handheld game systems. There is so much more you can do with a phone on top of playing games that people have steered away from buying handhelds such as the DS. Why spend money on something that can only do one thing when you can get a phone that does multiple things.

Is now the time to buy consumer electronics?
Richard Gikes, executive director of the Home Theater Specialists of America, states that now is the best time to buy consumer electronics. The reasons for this are linked to China. The cheap labor days in China are coming to an end because of new labor and worker protection laws. This has pushed labor costs up 15 percent. The price of materials used in making electronics, such as components and metals, have also gone up. Product supply is going to be low because factories are shutting down in June to clear the air for the Olympics. Another reason why now is best to buy consumer electronics is because of the depreciating U.S. dollar. The dollar has fallen 10 percent against the Chinese yuan. This is bad news because the majority of consumer electronics are produced in China. As a result, prices are going to be on the rise in order to increase profits.

The End of Exploding Laptops
Are you tired of your notebook spontaneously bursting into flames all the time? Me to! Researchers in Germany are developing a fire-proof lithium-ion battery to help solve this problem. They are trying to improve the conductivity of the new polymer; they figure that it's going to be three to five years before this new breed of battery finds its way into consumer devices. I can not wait to buy a laptop with one of these batteries; no longer will I be a victim of exploding notebooks!
