HIPAA - the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 was a very important development in the health care field. The patients benefited from this act, which imposed many standards and requirements for health care providers regarding transferring information and most importantly, patient privacy. I used to work in a medical billing office and we submitted documents electronically to Medi-Cal through EDI.
